Burns Care
Burns Care:
The Burns Centre is established at the Jubilee Block, Civil Hospital under the patronage of a philanthropic group; Friends of Burns Centre (Patients’ Welfare Society), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Government of Sindh. It is the first burns treatment unit in Pakistan to operate according to international standards and guidelines. It is a state-of-art project and is a model of public-private participation.
The Centre has modern operation theatres, emergency treatment facility, intensive care unit and a 24-hour clinical laboratory. All these diagnostic and treatment facilities are provided completely free to the poor and needy burn patients who cannot afford the extremely high treatment cost.
Previously, the Burns Ward of the Civil Hospital Karachi was the only burns unit in Pakistan. It used to provide treatment to patients from Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, KPK and neighbouring countries. The department managed approximately 20,000 patients per year, with an average of around 500-600 in-patients with severe burns, annually. Unfortunately, with the alarming rise in burns patients, the Burns ward was unable to handle all those cases and there was an urgent need to upgrade it into a full-fledged Burns Care Centre and a Centre of Excellence.
Thus, to bring hope for the burns patients, the Burns Centre has now been relocated at a more spacious heritage protected building; i.e the Jubilee Block within the premises of Civil Hospital Karachi.
