Department of Medicine, Civil Hospital Karachi consists of an indoor and outdoor facility. Indoor facility comprises of five full-fledged medical wards individually headed by a professor and has altogether 250 beds with an annual admission rate of 60,000 – 80,000 patients. Recently added 12 bedded Medical ICU has been providing useful services to seriously ill patients including facility of ventilator support which is otherwise very expensive in private setups and unaffordable for not only poor but white collared as well.
Department of Medicine has facility for diagnostic and therapeutic GI endoscopy, ultrasonography and specialized services for care of Diabetic foot including Neurothesiometry and Pedography. Outpatient department which has been recently renovated is attended by almost 1000 patients per day and is being run by OPD medical officers supervised by Interns and faculty from different wards on rotation basis.
Department of Medicine is well known for training of under and postgraduates in the field of medicine and has one of largest number of postgraduates in Sindh being trained. Besides clinical work, teaching and training of medical students and postgraduates, this department has become a hub of research activities and considerable number of high standard research papers are being produced and published annually in national and international journals. Not only that, the history of the department has been fertile as it has had services of stalwarts in the field of Medicine in Pakistan right from the beginning and has served the ailing mankind with responsibility, zest and fervor.
